Small socket set

Sometimes, bigger isn’t better. When it comes to socket sets, we recommend always keeping one in or around your car in case you need to make an emergency alteration or remove a component from the engine bay. However, lugging cumbersome toolboxes around in your boot can be impractical and get in the way of the important stuff. Instead, opt for a smaller, lighter travel socket set to put your mind at ease.

What is a socket set?

Socket sets are tool kits made up of several nut/bolt fastening sockets in various sizes with an accompanying socket wrench to attach them to. Since the gauge width of a nut or bolt can vary widely depending on its position and purpose - whether it be in the engine bay of a car or within the household - there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to the applicable sockets and therefore many are sold together at the same time to accommodate the range.

However, there lies a problem in the collective retail of multiple sockets together. To withstand the high torque strain exerted from the end of the wrench, the sockets are manufactured to be dense, tough and durable – sell many of them together at the same time and you can end up with a very heavy box.

To save on the weight and size of their carry box or bag, most sets are reduced to a handful of popular sizes, though some of the smallest travel kits may only include around five or six sockets.

Socket sets or spanner sets?

Although spanners have had their place in the workshop, boot and toolbox for decades, their efficiency and utilitarian potential is now greatly overshadowed by that of the socket wrench. Given the limited scope of movement afforded by a spanner within the tighter areas, addressing certain subjects can be tricky. With a socket wrench, however, the ratcheting feature found on most models grants easy movement in limited space, with the ability to reset position without moving the nut or bolt back.

Socket sets are also lighter than spanner sets as less material is used in their manufacture. Spanner heads are available in many different sizes but each is still designed with the same handle body, adding further weight. A socket set uses one socket wrench with interchangeable heads, thus keeping the weight down with less metal in the case.

The best heavy-duty small socket set

This set from RS Pro features 12 metric sockets from 4mm to 13mm wide, covering a great number of garage and engine applications including repairs and alterations. Along with the sockets, this pack includes a ratcheting wrench and a spinner handle with inch drive recess. **Cons:
**Larger box as a result
