The best sim racing gear shifter

Take control of your racing with a gear shifter

Gear shifters

The scrape between gates, unburnt fuel being dumped in exhaust manifolds and causing pop bangs, and downshifts so violent that they make your rear axle lock and back end step out. Nothing beats the perfect gear change, and let’s face it, auto ‘boxes are okay, but if you’re a proper driving nerd, you want to control that gear change as much as possible. Even if you're just sitting in your racing sim setup.

From sequential shift gears and flappy paddle boxes all the way through to the classic clutch and gear knob, you can use any to make your sim racing and driving experience as realistic as you want. After all, a Bentley Blower wouldn’t have a sequential box like today's modern F1 and race cars. You can even have a proper stick for when you’re rallying.

Honestly, the thought of a perfect rally downshifts with a bit of heel and toe to upset the rear to go sideways through a hairpin… it gives us the right kind of sweaty palms.

For the pros

If you got a pro sim rig, you’re probably looking at the above options thinking it’s all a bit Micky Mouse. These little shifter paddles will help you customise your rig if you want full Walt Disney. The shifters are manufactured from high-grade aluminium and feature a strong magnetic snap action with an adjustable actuation force tailored to individual driver requirements. Ascher has got fine-tuning down to a tee.

Pros

  • High levels of actuation
  • Adjustable
  • Supremely reliable

Cons

  • High price for just shifter paddles
  • Adjustable snap action force to tailor for driver preference
  • Black anodised high-grade aluminium construction for long-lasting performance and aesthetics.
  • No metal-to-metal contact provides a quieter operation
  • Ultra reliable micro switches tested to 1 million operations

Best sequential shifter

Yeah, all right, the Ascher paddles are a bit sim specific, so here, how about this little sequential shifter? Release full rally mode and go maximum attack with this as you bang through the ‘box all the break horsepower your sim has to offer. There is a clamp to mount this onto either a table or onto your sim up to 40mm. This allows the shifter to be either side or base mounted and allows for a degree of rotation to provide the best possible angle for use.

Pros

  • Realistic feel
  • Adjustable
  • Up to 9 possible configurations

Cons

  • High price
  • Authentic Shifting Action
  • Compact Design & Short Throw
  • High Initial Resistance For Realistic Feel

Best big sequential shifter

Okay, you’re starting to play with the big boys now, and this shifter has been developed with racing drivers to give you the most realistic gear shift possible. Instead of just pushing it into gear, this shifter will provide you with an initial resistance before changing gear, hopefully reducing those annoying gear changes. The EVO SQ sequential shifter can be mounted to sim cockpits via the groves in the base, which offer a wide range of adjustability so you can get the shifter in the perfect position.

Pros

  • Realistic feel
  • High Adjustable
  • Looks the part

Cons

  • Again, high price, but what a thing
  • Equipped with Meca's own-made electronics
  • Adjustments can be made to the shifter in the Meca Control Panel software.
  • The stiffness of the shifter can be adjusted from 2kg to 7kg.
  • Spring pre-load, motion length, and travel path settings can be set
  • Equipped with top-quality Omron switch

Essential mount

So you’ve got your shifter but nowhere to mount it – don’t worry, the RaceRoom Shifter Bracket is a sturdy plate to which you can mount your shifter. Depending on your preference, it will mount directly to RaceRoom Race Seats and can be put on either the left or right-hand side. These RaceRoom Shifter Brackets are available to mount the most popular brands, such as Logitech, Thrustmaster and Fanatec.

Pros

  • Compatible with popular brands
  • Mounted to the left or right
  • Easily adjusted

Cons

  • It’s ‘just’ a metal plate…
  • It can be mounted on the left or right side
  • Mount directly to RaceRoom Game Seats
  • Suitable for the RR3033 and RR3055 game seats

Best Playseat mount

If you’ve got a Playseat, you might consider a purpose-built mount. There are a few options to help you customise your play seat, but this shifter mount works well. It fits perfectly with the Logitech mentioned above G Driving Force Shifter.

Pros

  • Purpose-built
  • Works well with Logitech shifters
  • Easy to install

Cons

  • Very item-specific
  • Compatible with Evolution, Revolution, Gran Turismo, WRC, Forza and Nascar seats
  • Compatible with all gear shifters on the market
  • Patented steel-coated structure for extreme rigidity
  • Superior build quality and stability
  • Suitable for right or left mounting position
  • Free height adjustment of 30 mm

Best Sparco mount

This mad concoction looks slightly over-engineered, but we love it. It’s designed to be mounted to the Sparco Evolve sim racing chassis to allow the use of sim racing shifters and handbrakes (unsuitable for the Evolve GP chassis). Made from steel and finished in Satin paint to give a proper finish to your rig. The mount can be used with Thrustmaster, Fanatec or Logitech handbrakes and sequential gear shifters. The shifter mount is a left-hand side mount and can only be mounted to the left-hand side of the chassis.

Pros

  • Well respected brand
  • Purpose-built
  • Plenty of mounting points

Cons

  • Very expensive compared to similar products
  • Left-hand side only
