Classic car in garage

Classic cars are coveted worldwide for their ability to elicit a unique pleasure when driven, one that is often imitated by the new generation but rarely, if ever, matched. Modern cars are safer, more comfortable and now bristling with technology to simplify the driving experience, but for all their virtues, the spirits of modern cars seem to go missing somewhere within all that chassis reinforcement. The thrill of driving connection has been lost, and so instead we look to the raw and romantic past of motoring in search of it again.

The only trouble is cars age just like the rest of us. Today, many classics bear the scars of all the years they’ve weathered, be it internally or on the outside. In short, they’re likely to break down in some way at some point, so on that day, you’ll need the right tools to get it back on the road. Start with a good-quality socket set.

What is a socket set?

A socket set is a collection of different nut and bolt fastening sockets. Socket wrenches – the tools to which sockets are attached – are frequently used in the repair and maintenance of classic cars as a component or panel may need to be dismantled entirely to reach the root of an issue. Having a socket wrench with a wide range of different-sized sockets to hand will keep you equipped to take on any number of mechanical repairs so you can get back to that driving rapture.

What to look out for?

Of course, the wider the range of socket sizes, the better equipped you will be. Manufacturers will include the majority of the most popular sizes, but you may want to opt for one of the largest sets if you’re looking for peace of mind. Some sets will also include a wrench as standard, but these can differ both in quality and capability. If you’re looking for the easiest experience when addressing the nuts and bolts in your classic car, a ratcheting wrench will keep your rotational movement going, even in the really tight areas.

To help you choose a classic car socket set that's right for you, we've put together a list of our favourites below.
