You may be forgiven for thinking that finding the best car gifts for a loved one is an impossibly difficult process. You know that they like cars, but you just don't know what to get. The car world is varied and full of different subcultures, so the gift ideas vary. You can find anything from tasty BMW gifts to branded umbrellas.

For younger petrolheads, it can be even more difficult. They might have all the Hot Wheels toys and racing games at their disposal, so where do you go from there? And it has to be something memorable. Motoring related books are a fine place to start as well, to sprinkle some inspiration.

Beyond car shampoo, finding car-related gifts is tricky because tastes vary. What we've done here is supply a succinct guide of gift suggestions for petrolheads of all ages. It extends from car gifts for young petrolheads to adults as well.

The best car gifts

Editor's pick

best car giftsVia Motorbooks

Rrp: $75.00

Price: $38.67

From 1923-2023, the Le Mans 24h has been the ultimate in test endurance for a manufacturer, a team, and the machine they're racing. It's by far the most famous single-motor race and the most rewarding to win.

This book takes you through it all. From Chenard Walcker to the Bentley Boys to Jaguar and all the way up until Ferrari's historic win in 2023 - the first time since 1965. It's an essential guide for any car enthusiast and motorsport fan.

Pros

  • A nice, comprehensive guide to Le Mans
  • Includes every race from each year in that 100-year period

Cons

  • The year-by-year chapters are quite short

Best Ferrari gift

best car giftsVia KK Scale Models

Rrp: $109.95

Price: $103.95

This fabulously detailed model from KK Scale Models represents the same Ferrari Testarossa that started in the hit TV series Miami Vice. The story goes that in the first two seasons, the Corvette-based Daytona replica angered Ferrari so much that a lawsuit was filed.

To avoid the legal trouble, the producers agreed to accept two brand-new Testarossas from Ferrari. They were black but hastily repainted white so they could be seen better in the show's many night scenes.

Pros

  • Great Miami Vice model
  • Very well detailed

Cons

  • White isn't the best Ferrari colour

Best Porsche gift

best car giftsVia Norev

Norev seems to have a habit of making amazingly detailed, great-quality model cars at tempting prices. This 1:43 original 911 is one of their finest pieces. It makes for a really nice ornament, and given that Porsche still makes the same basic design 60 years on, it doesn't feel like it's aged that much.

Nevertheless, with silver Fuchs wheels and all the chrome, this is a very pretty 911 model. Perhaps it would be nicer if it was in a bolder colour than black.

Pros

  • Great scale model of a 911
  • Amazing value

Cons

  • Olive Green, please

Best Mercedes gift

best car giftsVia eBay

If you're ever fortunate enough to place your bum in the seat of a 300SL, you will quickly notice the distinctive gear knob peering at you, beckoning you to shift through its gears and drive like Sir Stirling Moss in anger.

If your budget doesn't quite stretch to the evocative Gullwing, then keeping yourself dry from the rain will substitute well because the handle of this branded umbrella replicates that exact gear knob. It's so cool, the CAR office simply cannot get it out of our minds.

Pros

  • Incredibly cool umbrella
  • Will keep you dry in the coming rainy weeks

Cons

  • Shifting gears isn't an option, sadly

Best BMW gift

best car giftsVia Etsy
Price: £26.99+

www.etsy.com

The E30 M3 arrived as a homologation special by BMW's Motorsports division. It had one goal, and that was to obliterate the Mercedes 190E Cosworth in Touring Car racing. Later, it would challenge the Ford Sierra Cosworth too.

This wonderful 80s-style print celebrates the Bavarian milestone in a colourful and artsy way. It's available in a number of colours and sizes and will look fabulous anywhere in your home.

Pros

  • Very nice portrait
  • Range of colours and sizes available

Cons

  • Deciding where to put it is always tricky

Best Aston Martin gift

The story of the feature car on the hoodie is quite a fascinating one, which is why it makes our hearts thump with the sound of a vintage Le Mans car.

After the brand was saved from receivership in 1925, engineer and racer A.C. Bertelli set about taking the brand racing and introduced the LM1 and LM2 models into the 24h of Le Mans in 1928. Sadly, they didn't finish. The Aston Martin International was a sort of road-going version of the racers, using the same 1.5 litre 4-cylinder engine and twin SU carburettors. It was popular with private entrants in racing and one of the originators of 'win on Sunday, sell on Monday'.

The car depicted on the hoodie had a fairly rich history of racing at Brooklands before living a life in Scotland until 1939. It eventually made its way to Canada, where it would be restored, presumably amending the effects of the Scottish weather. The International would eventually be replaced by the Ulster, which went on to be a more successful sports car, but nevertheless, the International story remains an interesting one in its own right.

Pros

  • Very interesting tale behind the print car
  • A lovely design

Cons

  • A print of it hurtling around Brooklands would've been nicer

Best classic car book

This extraordinary biography, pieced together and written by Miranda Seymour, is based on a true story. Hellé Nice skilfully piloted the most powerful racers in the late 1920s and early 1930s, notably Bugattis and Alfa Romeos.

She gave the likes of all the male racers, including Louis Chiron and Tazio Nuvolari, a serious challenge. But her name and career would be all but forgotten after a frightening accident in Brazil in 1936 and rumours of espionage after the Second World War. This book tells the whole story, and if there's anything you need to read as a petrolhead, this is it.

Pros

  • Utterly fascinating story
  • Pieced together using hundreds of old photographs and archives

Cons

  • It's a real shame about Nice's outcome

Best gift for a very young petrolhead

Walmart$15.46View offer
Kohl's$24.99View offer
Macy's$36.90View offer

For the youngest of motoring fans, is this car transporter. As we know, petrolheads go through the inevitable stage of being obsessed with trailers at some stage. This Green Toys car transporter caters to this, but we pick this over others because we like the style of both the truck and the cars.

Pros

  • Perfect for infant petrolheads
  • Neat, old-school American-style of the vehicles

Cons

  • The colours could be a little better chosen

Best go kart for kids

best car giftsVia Costway

In our opinion, pedal cars remain superior in performance, handling and reliability to the arguably faddish electrified alternatives. With this Costway pedal car, your young one is able to experience the essentials, such as handbrake turns, clipping apexes, and so on. This model is aimed for ages three to six, or a maximum user weight of 30 kilograms. The seat is more comfortable than competitors and is adjustable too.

Pros

  • Good, fun little pedal car
  • Ideal for young, keen drivers

Cons

  • No option for childish adults, sadly

Best gaming wheel

best car giftsVia Thrustmaster

Racing wheels can be a tricky thing. But to make things a bit simpler, the Thrustmaster T300 RS is a superb option for beginners and casual sim racers. The T300 RS is really well made and good value, featuring a brushless motor and offering sharp, precise control.

The T300 RS is for PlayStation 4 and PC, but if it's Xbox compatibility you need, then the Thrustmaster TX is for you. Gaming wheels offer that little bit extra over twiddling your thumbs around a controller, so if you can make it work in your room, we recommend it.

Pros

  • Superb quality
  • Great in Gran Turismo

Cons

  • No clutch and stick included

Best jump starter

best car giftsVia Noco

Rrp: $124.95

Price: $99.95
Alternative retailers
Walmart$99.95View offer
Blain Farm & Fleet$99.99View offer
Tractor Supply$134.99View offer

Small? Check. Jump starts petrol engines up to 6.0-litres and diesel up to 3.0-litres? Check. IP65 rated? Check. Also, a general power bank? Check. 100-lumen LED flashlight? Check. What a wonderful device.

NOCO is one of the go-to brands for battery chargers and jump starters. They're tough, compact, and very effective. The GB40 is the best for most motorists, though smaller and larger models are available for those that need them.

Pros

  • Covers a wide range of engines
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Bad luck if you own a 6.2-litre AMG

Best off-road driving experience

best car giftsVia Experience Days

On the other hand, if loose surface driving is more their bag, going full throttle in a Rage buggy offers a thrill that is very hard to match.

The Rage buggy is every bit as quick as a sports car, only it can do that on dirt. This driving experience is available in five locations: Yorkshire, Oxfordshire, Leicestershire, Manchester, and Derbyshire. Drivers must be at least 17.

Pros

  • Extreme fun
  • Buggies are like nothing else to drive

Cons

  • You may need a good shower afterwards

Best subscription gift

best car giftsCAR
Price: £2.70 per issue (starting)

www.greatmagazines.co.uk

Put together by some of the world's most respected motoring journalists and with sensational photography to match, CAR magazine is the place to go for conclusive tests and exclusive industry insights. Plus, in typical CAR style, you'll get some chuckles along the way.

A subscription to print or digital editions of CAR is a top gift for petrolheads. In fact, you could say it has been since 1962.

Pros

  • It's CAR, the content is always great
  • Great journalism

Cons

  • It's a shame the new issues don't come weekly

How do you get ideas for the best car gifts for someone?

It's probably best to observe their interests and habits. It's okay to say they're into cars, but have you observed what kind of car(s) they own and had in the past? Which are the ones they talk about most? If they dearly miss an old Golf GTI, then a good VW gift will probably suit them.

If they're raving about the quality of engineering, then a Mercedes gift will be finely suited. But everyone is different, and we can never tell you through a lens what somebody wants. But please do remember that on the special occasion, it's the thought process that matters!

What's the best car gift you've ever received?

One of us in the office received tickets to the Goodwood Festival of Speed after finishing his GCSEs many years ago. That was special. Almost as special as a driving experience, you could also gift someone.
